National Working Environment Monitoring Station Celebrated 5 years of establishment

National Working Environment Monitoring Station (WEMOS) in National Institute of Labour Protection (NILP) has been conducting working environment monitoring functions since 1998. Up to 2002, WEMOS has been recognized as an organization of national environment monitoring network in accordance with Decision No 04/2002/Q§-BKHCNMT of Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
Though 5 years of development, WEMOS now has its two major divisions (Division of environment monitoring & analysis and Division of environmental pollution control technology), the administrative office and enterprise for manufacture and export & import environmental devices. The WEMOS’s staff include 28 researchers of MSc, MA, PhD… belong to many professions such as Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Technology…
With the synchronous investment for its infrastructure and cutting-edge monitoring and lab devices, it is possible to confirm that WEMOS has become one of the most modern monitoring station in the country. Thanks to well-equipped facilities, well-trained staff and managers, experienced researchers and technicians WEMOS has met all the requirements of national environment monitoring network. The lab system of WEMOS has been registered and recognized as Vietnam Laboratory Standard (VILAS 441) in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 : 2005
Right after taking part in national environment monitering network, WEMOS has conducted regular monitoring for industrial enterprises. At its very first days, only about 10 industrial enterprises were monitored by the station but up to 2005 the number rose up to 28 industrial enterprises in 3 regions and the monitoring points have also raised year by year (in 2011, 115 points in provinces and cities). Besides, WEMOS has also organized occupational health checking for nearly 1,000 workers to assess the impacts of working environment on workers’ health.
Together with conducting the taks of working environment monitoring appointed by the State, WEMOS also implements environment monitoring for hundreds of enterprises in and out industrial zones (in 2010, 400 enterprises were monitered).
Annually, with its function of conducting services on environmental protection, WEMOS is considered the key organization which helps VGCL to implement tasks in accordance with Joint Resolution No 01/2004/NQLT dated November 15, 2004 between VGCL’s Presidium and Ministy of Environment and Natural Resources to regularly organize activities responding to World Environment Day on June 5th, the week of clean water and environmental hygiene and the week “Making the world cleaner”.
From 2007 to now, WEMOS has presided to implement 02 Ministerial projects and 03 institutional projects on water pollution and gas pollution control; 10 tasks and projects for State administration on environmental protection including tasks on setting up technical standards for analysis process; projects on setting up water processing models, dust pollution and toxic gases control; tasks for management such as setting up model of “Sustainable development on environment” for small and medium enterprises, that contribute to set up enterprises’ culture and healthy lifestyle for workers”; Setting up model that combines risk and enironmental disaster assessment with working environment monitoring; Defining investment demand and expenses for environmental protection activities at enterprises with potential high risks (thermo-electricity, hydrolectricity, chemicals…); Investigating to assess situation of OSH management and environmental protection in industrial enterprises, proposing regualtions on merging OSH&EP management.
Projects on environmental protection contained many applycation models which brought out practical effects and are possible to applied in wide scale. Besides, WEMOS has also implemented many projects on environmental pollution treatment, working environment improvement for enterprises.
In the coming time, the enterprise of manufacture and export & import environmental devices of WEMOS will take part actively in the project of establishing Scientific and Technological Company in order to boost the development and applications of environmental pollution treatment technology effectively.
The monitoring activities of WEMOS will be continuously intensified, the process of setting up standards and analysis procedures will be paid more attention to strengthen the capacity of VILAS; WEMOS will take part in monitoring industrial working environment more actively; propose the establishment of “continuously environmental monitoring point” located at WEMOS building.
Especially, WEMOS should be more active and powerful in providing public services in environmental protection, doing its utmost to fulfill environmental protection tasks, closely co-ordinating with other institutes and organizations to put the science of environmental pollution control into practice, continuously training the human resourses and developing its material facilities to become more and more stable.
In 2011, WEMOS has received Vietnam Environment Award of Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for its achievements.
