4 principles to make a better workplace

Almost works are carried out at workplace where workers repetitively do a job hundred times a day. Hence, only a small improvement can bring numerous benefit.

Unsound working position and posture will reduce the productivity and quality of the products and the workers can intensify feelings of fatigue.

Each workplace is considered the unification of the workers and jobs. It is necessary to create a workplace where workers and jobs are unified to carry out jobs smoothly and without interruption.

Below are 4  principles to make a better workplace.

The simple improvements will contribute to improve working conditions, workers health, increase productivity and the quality of the products.

1. Materials, tools, control button should be located at the area of the reach of workers to save time and effort

– Objects that need to be held and used should be arranged in front of the workers to the distance of 15-45 cm from the workstation.

– Materials, which put into boxes or drawers, should be located in an area easily to reach and at a suitable height. In case there are many materials are used at the same time, they should be arranged on another table next to the worker.

– Materials and tools which are not usually used (several times per hour) should be arranged at a position where the workers must lean forward or to the side to reach, even out of the workplace.

2. Improve working posture to get more effect

Unfavorable working posture not only wastes time but also easily causes fatigue. For example, the action of raising arms over the head will make your arms fell tired quickly. The actions of leaning forward or twisting your body repetitivelywill cause bad effect to the spine. Those actions can lead to product failures or accidents.

The following solutions will help to avoid unfavorable effects at the workplace:

– Do job at elbow height and have enough space to rest your feet;

– Use footrest platform for the small workers and tool racks for the tall ones.

3. Use clamp, fixed frame, lever and other tools to save time and effort

– Apply leverage to move or lift materials to a height.

– Use fixture such as holding fixture, clamp and other kind of fixing tools holding an object during the work and free two hands;

– Use hanging tools for repetitive motions at the same position;

– Use rotary table for the works need a lot of actions.

4. Discrimination principle to limit errors

– Arrange switches, control buttons… to be easy see and touch or can be controlled in the field of view of the workers;

– Allocate and use devices in accordance with standards (such as installation position, direction to do the work, rules for signs, color of the switches and control buttons) to limit errors;

– Provide notes under control buttons in Vietnamese language;

– Emergency stop button should be placed at position that easy to look.
