Guideline for safe lifting

Occupational musculoskeletal disorders are manifestations of occupational harms which can be seen spreadly in many countries all over the world.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are manifestations of injuries or pain in the human musculoskeletal system, including the joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support intervertebral disc. MSDs are a group of painful disorders which different in degrees and may lead to disability. Incorrect lifting posture or unsafe lifting weight are hazardous factors cause MSDs. In Vietnam, there are concrete standards on the maximum carrying weights as followings:

1. General rules for safe lifting and preventing MSDs

– Firm posture.

– Tightly hold the object in both hands, if possible.

– Squat down, keep your upper back straight when lifting, avoid bending too low.

– Hold the object as close to your body as possible.

– Bend your knees slightly, keep your upper back straight when put the object down.

2. Concrete rules for safe lifting and preventing MSDs

– Do not lift or carry any object when you cannot hold it tightly, even when it is not too heavy but bulky or too large for you to hold.

– Do not lift or carry an object if it is over 20kg, asking for help or using mechanical aids.

Posture to lift a heavy load

– Hold a load at the level of your belly bottom, keep your upper back straight, bend your knees and hips. Do not lean your hips forwards, knees straight. Keep your body at the posture as required.

– Do not twist your body, use your feet to change direction, do not twist your hips because it is easy to get injured.

– Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and close to the object as possible, firm footing.

– Do not reach out/lift the object over your head, using platform or ladder to get the same height  as the object.

– Observe above the object, preventing things from falling on your eyes and face.

– Keep the object as close your body as possible, keep your elbows close to your body.

– Use both hands to lift a load.

– If carry a heavy sack or a trunk, you should put it on your shoulder and keep your back straight.
