ABSTRACT
The study is a comparative cross-sectional design which includes a study group of 289 shrimp processing workers and a reference group of 133 workers whose jobs are not on the processing lines. These subjects were interviewed by Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Work-related Musculoskeletal Questionnaire for the determining of the prevalence of the musculoskeletal  symptoms. Potential risks produced by working postures which can develop MSDs were assessed by the REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) checklist.
The results showed that the prevalence of the subjective symptoms is as high as 92.2% among workers who work on the processing lines. The symptoms on hand and wrist are atop of the prevalence, which is as high as 68,5%, following by disorders on shoulders (67.5%), low back (63%), foot/ankle (58.8%), neck (57.1%), and knee/leg (41.2%). The prevalence of symptoms in all body parts among study group is significantly  higher than that one among reference group with p<0.001, the odd ratio of the prevalence in study group is 3.3 to 8.5 higher than the one in the reference group.  The assessment of working postures by the REBA checklist had the score of 8 which implied an immediate improvement of the working postures.
The study presented the relationship between adverse ergonomic exposure and the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, which implied the necessity of improving working condition and working environment in order to reduce occupational musculoskeletal disorders among shrimp processing workers.
